For this family, returning to their roots in Omaha meant finding a home that could evolve with their growing family. Their newly purchased 1971-built home in Deer Creek offered potential but required a dramatic transformation to support modern life. With a vision to blend classic charm and fresh, functional design, The Modern Hive partnered with the homeowners to overhaul the entire main floor—introducing a new kitchen, mudroom, laundry, family room, and custom-built dining nook. The result is a bright, livable space that balances refined details with family-first functionality.
We reimagined the kitchen by adding a longer island, relocating appliances, and introducing symmetry with new cabinetry. A deep navy island base paired with warm wood accents and quartz countertops now anchors the heart of the home.
Organic materials—like wood slat paneling, porcelain tile, and biophilic design features—were thoughtfully applied throughout the home to bring the outside in and reinforce a sense of calm.
We transformed underutilized areas into highly functional zones for daily life. A smartly reconfigured mudroom now features ample cabinetry, hooks, and hampers, while the laundry space includes tall cabinetry for vertical storage and hidden clutter.
Creating sufficient storage without overwhelming the space was key. Our team incorporated concealed cabinetry, built-in banquettes, and niche shelving to keep surfaces clean and clutter-free.
Structural changes—like removing a support wall to open up the living space—required creative coordination between design and contractor teams. The result is seamless, open flow between the living, kitchen, and dining zones.
With three young children in the home, we specified durable materials like engineered hardwood, wipeable finishes, and family-friendly layouts—all while maintaining a timeless and sophisticated design aesthetic.
