Tucked beneath a traditional home in Omaha’s West Fairacres neighborhood, this 1960s-era basement was ready for reinvention. The goal? Create a bright, elevated, and multifunctional retreat that felt anything but typical. What began as a dim, segmented layout has now become one of our favorite transformations—complete with a statement bar, cozy lounge, bespoke office, and spa-like bath. Designed for both family living and entertaining, this lower-level remodel proves that even the most overlooked spaces can become design showpieces.
Functionality was prioritized without sacrificing style. A tambour-door system was built into the stair wall, concealing generous storage while doubling as a sleek design detail. Additional floor-to-ceiling cabinetry houses everything from board games to blankets, flanking the new egress window and framing a cozy bench.
A mirrored wall amplifies light throughout the basement, while a mix of integrated lighting, sconces, and decorative fixtures helps define zones and elevate the overall mood.
Anchoring the open layout, the bar features an oversized island perfect for hosting—complete with seating on both sides, suspended metal shelving, and a refined palette that adds instant polish.
We installed an egress window to invite natural light, then tucked mechanical components like ductwork and cleanouts behind custom millwork—ensuring access without visual disruption.
The original space had five different ceiling levels, creating a fractured, closed-in feel. We consolidated these into just two cohesive heights, dramatically improving the visual flow and airiness of the space.
Two support poles interrupted the layout. We installed a steel beam to remove one and cleverly hid the other within a custom office wall—complete with integrated lighting and a concealed door to maintain aesthetic continuity.
